One of my favorite stories is that of Winthrop, WA (population 349), which is transforming itself from a do-nothing town into a technological hot-spot, recruiting entrepreneurs from Seattle. They have been so successful that they are trying to bring back their young people and have a wonderful website for that purpose at www.bringbackthekids.com.
I was looking at their website and found this part of it very moving. Here it is:
“You know who they are
They used to live here, too
Now they only visit on holidays
They used to sit on the fence and watch the grass grow
They helped on the farm, fished in the rivers and walked the trails
It seemed like they would always be here, but now they’re not
They’ve gone onto greener pastures
They have moved to other places
Places with jobs”
