Durango, CO (population 13,922) was founded as a railroad town in 1880 and quickly grew as a regional hub for the silver and gold mining region. Within a decade the town enjoyed the first electric lights in the state, streetcars, three newspapers and five rail lines that connected in the town. When the minerals were depleted, the town went into a slow decline but the old grand buildings on Main Street remained.
Today, Durango is going thru a renaissance as a regional center for recreation, skiing, shopping, medical, etc. The downtown is one of the nicer ones that I’ve seen and helps to make Durango a special place. It is very deserving of being one of my top 100 agurbs®.
